Link Love (26/05/2012)

I have decided that for the moment at least, I’m going to write or quote a sentence or two for each link, give you an idea about the topic. Also, I do realize that not every link is going to be of interest to every person. These are things I find interesting or thought-provoking, and I hope you will like some of them as well. If you come across anything you think I might find interesting, feel free to send the links to my email at rebekkaksteg[at]gmail[dot]com or tweet them to me.

“The presentation doesn’t so much offer a tantalising glimpse of extreme right wing views and evangelical Christianity in the military — it’s more of a “caught-red-handed-with-his-pants-down” moment. The course material is crammed full of anti-Islamic ideology, suggesting that the entirety of Islam is America’s enemy and that the U.S. might have to destroy the holy cities of Mecca and Medina if it is to ultimately triumph.” Pentagon Suspends Anti-Islamic Course – Friendly Atheist

“That means you’d better be really confident that it’s worse for people who are engaged in behavior you condemn to be healthier than to be sick.  You’d better have data that makes it clear that their suffering will actually motivate a change in behavior (and, in this case, you need to persuade people that homosexuality is harmful in the first place).  Otherwise, like the people who reject Vancouver’s safe zone for drug addicts, you sound like you’re really trying to restore some kind of cosmic balance, where people who do bad things need to have bad outcomes, even if we have the power to protect them.” When Moral Hazard is the Safest Course – Unequally Yoked

Atheism isn’t a religion.  It’s a way to categorize a minority of people who want to take responsibility for themselves rather than credit or blame a supernatural designer. We do believe in something. Ourselves.” Atheism is Beautiful. Yeah, I said it. – Friendly Atheist

“The “catch” here is that you’re supposed to read in a few paragraphs before you get to the “gotcha!” bit: She was once a he! So it’s okay that we point out that she was “25 and curvaceous”; it’s okay to literally put her looks before her life. She succeeded so well at womanhood that she “drew admiring glances.” Hell, she was a better woman than most of us who were born that way—she had ribs removed for a smaller waist! “Honestly, I was actually pretty upset one night about where my art was going and my inability to wear a shirt I wanted because the image would distort too much. I started one comic and the ideas just kept coming. Since I started the comics to vent my frustrations, I didn’t want it to be a source of frustrations for other people so I try hard to keep it as positive and inclusive as possible.” Artist Interview: Busty Girl Comics – The Full Figured Chest

” But how are we, the reader, to decipher friend from foe? How are we supposed to view articles highlighting celebrity cellulite and not sulk in the mirror, imagining a big red arrow pointing to various parts of our bodies?
