Fabulous Female: Somaly Mam

This weeks Fabulous Female is Somaly Mam, the amazingly strong woman who fights against sex trafficking and prostitution in Cambodia. Reading her book The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine about two years ago made a huge impression on me. Somaly Mam was born in the early 70’s as part of a minority in Cambodia. She lost her parents, and poverty let to her being sold into sexual slavery by a man, who posed as her grandfather. She was later sold to a brothel, where she worked with other young girls, suffering unimaginable cruelty and horror. Thanks to a French citizen she managed to escape, and move to France, although she always vowed to never forget, and to one day return and help the women and girls of Cambodia.

Somaly Mam Foundation

She did so, in 1996, when she returned and started the Somaly Mam Foundation (read more here). The  following video helps explain, what the Somaly Mam Foundation does, and why their work is so incredibly important. Please watch the video, it’s heartbreaking, but it is SO important that we know about these things, realize what’s going on and do our best to make a difference.

Sign up with the Somaly Mam Foundation for a one-time donation, or for a small monthly donation to support this incredibly important work.

  1. It breaks my heart to hear which cruelty women have to suffer in this world, and I endlessly admire their spirit and courage to change something for the better.
