Secular Sunday: Jealousy and the Christian God

This is a reblog from my Tumblr. For a long time I have been wanting to talk about religion and why I am an Atheist. Many people have also asked me to write about my journey away from religion. Hopefully I will have time to write about these things soon, but for now, a small side topic.

So, I feel like sharing something from this Sunday’s teaching, since it’s about something which can easily be misunderstood. The first of the ten commandments; “Thou shall not have other gods” or something like that… A mean, all in all the commandments can seem rather strict and like any other…

First thing that came to mind while reading this post was Louis CK – God Is Like a Shitty Girlfriend. Louis CK is funny as always, but he has a point. The God portrayed in the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament is not a loving God, but a jealous, possessive and abusive God.

Yes, I think the God portrayed in OT is abusive, and if you insist on personifying him by comparing it to being in a romantic relationship, it is my opinion that you are in an abusive relationship.

…but  because of the simple reason that he is jealous of any other gods, that you may have! He want’s you all to himself and do not want to share your affection with anyone or anything else!

Excessive jealousy and possessiveness, especially coupled with trying to isolate you is a typical sign of an abuser.

Like in a relationship, between two lovers, one of them becomes jealous if they see their partner flirting with someone else. They become jealous because they love their parnter and wants them all to themselves,…

If any of my friends were in a relationship like that, I would tell them to run for the hills. Not healthy.

People today make jealousy into this big all-powerful emotion that cannot possibly be dealt with. Jealousy is an emotion like any other. Emotions are information, what you do with that information is up to you. Jealousy is normal, but it is not an excuse to be an asshole.

It’s actually more like God saying: “Don’t have any other gods, please? Am I not enough? Can’t I be your only one?”

Wow, now that just sounds needy and insecure. Run!
